🐾 Found Kittens Without a Mom? Here’s What To Do
First—don’t assume they’re abandoned.
Mother cats often leave their nests for hours to hunt and will return when it’s safe.
⏳ 1. Wait & Watch (6–12+ hours)
Observe from a distance (at least 30–40 feet away).
If you stay too close, mom may not come back.
👣 2. Check if Mom Returns
Sprinkle a light ring of flour or dirt around the nest.
If you see paw prints later, she came back—great news.
🐱 3. If Mom Returns
Leave the kittens with her. She is their best chance at survival.
You can help by:
Putting out food and water nearby (not right next to the nest)
Adding a simple shelter (like a tote with straw) if needed
🚨 4. If Mom Does NOT Return
Step in only if kittens show signs of distress:
Cold to the touch
Crying nonstop
Dirty, weak, or not moving
Immediate priority: WARMTH
Use a heating pad on low (wrapped in a towel), or body heat
Never feed a cold kitten
🍼 5. Get Help ASAP
Caring for newborn kittens is extremely demanding.
Reach out to:
Local rescues (best option for neonatal care)
Experienced fosters
Veterinarians familiar with kitten care
Avoid taking them straight to overcrowded shelters if possible—many lack the resources for round-the-clock bottle feeding.
💛 Important Reminder
Well-meaning people often “rescue” kittens too soon.
In many cases, this actually reduces their chances of survival.
If mom is around, she is the best caregiver they have.
***Be prepared to be their new mama if you remove kittens from their nest with no plan. Rescues and shelters are inundated and usually just don't have seasoned volunteers able to take on bottle babies feeding around the clock. Don't ever just take the babies and leave mama behind trap her and get her with her babies and then get her spayed. Taking her babies throws her into a heat cycle only to be pregnant again.
